Cast a tighter loop and add line speed. Keep the rod tip on a straight path, accelerate smoothly to a crisp stop, and use your line hand to haul, pulling on the line during each cast so it travels faster. Then let extra line shoot through the guides after the forward stop.
What is the double haul?
The double haul is a pull on the fly line with your line hand during both the back cast and the forward cast. Each haul bends the rod deeper and speeds up the line, so you can cast farther, cut through wind and carry heavier flies with less effort.
How to do the double haul, step by step
- Start with 30 to 40 feet of line out, your line hand holding the line close to the reel.
- As you start the back cast, pull the line down toward your hip with your line hand, timed with the rod's acceleration.
- As the line unrolls behind you, let your line hand drift back up toward the reel, giving back the line you pulled.
- As you start the forward cast, haul again, short and sharp, during the rod's acceleration.
- After the forward stop, open your line hand and let the extra line shoot.
Common double haul mistakes
- Hauling at the wrong time. The haul has to match the rod's acceleration. Too early or too late and it adds slack instead of speed.
- Hauling too long. Short, quick hauls work better than long pulls.
- Not giving line back. If your line hand doesn't drift back up after the back-cast haul, there's nothing left to haul on the forward cast.
- Forcing it. More power opens the loop. Timing, not strength, makes distance.
How to practice the double haul
Practice on grass, in stages. Start with a single haul on the back cast only and let the line land behind you. Then practice the forward-cast haul on its own. Put them together at a slow tempo, and add line only once your loops stay tight.
