No experience is necessary. Many students come to their first lesson having never held a fly rod. Your lesson will be personalized to your experience, goals, and learning style, and all casting equipment is provided at no charge.

Your first lesson begins with the fundamentals of fly casting, including how to select equipment, how the equipment works, proper rod and reel assembly and maintenance, and most importantly, the simple principles behind an efficient cast. Bill will evaluate your experience, explain and demonstrate each movement, and give you practical exercises for productive practice on your own.

Fly fishing combines casting with selecting flies, reading the water, presentation, line control, hooking, and landing fish. Lesson length depends on the program you select and the number of students attending. First lessons generally last from 2½ to 3½ hours and include scheduled breaks. This allows enough time for explanation, demonstration, hands-on instruction, and supervised practice without rushing the learning process. Most subsequent lessons last 1.5 hr to 2 hours.

Yes. Lessons are available seven days a week by appointment. Available dates and times can be viewed through the online booking system. If you do not see a time that works for you, call Bill at 415-571-6149 to discuss other scheduling possibilities.

Yes. Lessons are available for individuals, couples, children, families, and groups. Instruction is personalized to each student’s experience, goals, and learning style. Casting equipment is provided at no charge. Please contact Bill to discuss the ages of the participants, group size, scheduling, and available family or group discounts.

Yes. Discounts are available for active-duty military personnel, seniors, families, and groups. The family plan is $300 for two people, with each additional family member costing $100. Contact Bill at 415-571-6149 to discuss the appropriate lesson and any available discount before booking.

Yes. Gift certificates for fly casting lessons are available and make an excellent gift for beginners or experienced anglers. Buy a gift certificate online. If you need help choosing the right lesson, call Bill at 415-571-6149.

If you wish to pay by credit or debit card, payment must be made through PayPal when you book your lesson online. You do not need a PayPal account to use a credit or debit card. Credit cards cannot be accepted at the lesson. If you have not prepaid, you may pay by cash or Venmo at the time of your lesson.

If you need to cancel or reschedule your lesson, please call Bill at 415-571-6149 at least 48 hours before your scheduled appointment. Providing advance notice allows the lesson time to be offered to another student. If weather or other conditions require Bill to reschedule your lesson, he will contact you directly.

Bill has offered this satisfaction guarantee throughout his decades of teaching: if he cannot explain and demonstrate fly casting in a way that makes sense to you, you do not pay for the lesson. In more than 35 years, no student has ever needed to use the guarantee.

Lessons are held at Marlin Park in Foster City, California. The park provides an excellent setting (water and grass) for learning and practicing fly casting; public restrooms and picnic tables are also available. Your exact meeting location and any necessary directions will be confirmed when your lesson is scheduled.

Dress comfortably for outdoor conditions at Marlin Park. Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes and bring layered clothing, as temperatures and wind can change. A hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, drinking water, and a snack for longer lessons are recommended. All casting equipment is provided at no charge, but you are welcome to bring your own rod and reel if you would like Bill to evaluate them.

Lessons are held outdoors at Marlin Park, and changing temperatures or moderate wind can be useful for learning real-world casting skills. If rain, excessive wind, or other conditions make the lesson unsafe or impractical, Bill will contact you to reschedule at no additional charge.

Lessons focus on teaching the skills needed to become a successful fly angler, beginning with fly casting, equipment selection and setup, knots, leaders, flies, and presentation techniques. Instruction takes place on the water and grass at Marlin Park, but it is not a guided fishing trip. The goal is to give you a strong foundation and the confidence to practice independently and fish more successfully.

No. We provide all casting equipment needed for your lesson at no charge. If you already own equipment, you are welcome to bring it so Bill can check that it is properly assembled, balanced, and appropriate for your needs.

It is usually best to wait until after your first lesson before purchasing equipment. All casting equipment is provided at no charge, allowing you to learn what rod, reel, and line will best suit your needs. Bill can then help you make an informed choice based on your goals, the type of fishing you plan to do, and your budget.
